Year 5 - Academic Armadillos
Year 5 are taught by Mr Tierney and Mrs Baker and he has Mrs Anderson, Mrs Pender-Hill, Mrs Butcher and Miss Swann as his Teaching Assistants who keep him right! They will all do their utmost to ensure that the children are engaged and enjoying their learning but they do work them hard!
Topics taught in Literacy include ‘Beowolf’, ‘There’s a Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom’, ‘Cosmic’, Myst and during one term the topic is chosen and planned by the children – with Mr Tierney’s guidance. ICT, Art and D&T work will usually linked in with the Literacy topic, although certain areas like Coding are discretely taught. Children also have daily Guided Reading and S.P.A.G. (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) sessions.
At home, we expect children in Year 5 to read everyday and have the opportunity to read aloud at least once a week to an adult. We ask that parents try to make the time to hear their children read.
In Numeracy, children learn about number and algebra, specifically properties of numbers and sequences, place value, fractions, decimals, percentages, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, measures, position, angles and handling data. This is all done through differentiated practical and written work pitched at each child’s ability.
In all areas of learning, a big emphasis is placed on self and peer assessment. Children need to be able to identify the steps that need to be taken to improve. Speaking and listening to each other is vital and collaborative learning is encouraged though children also know when they have to work independently.
Mr Tierney also loves P.E. so he gets the children outside as much as possible, especially in the summer terms. We will be following the Real P.E. scheme of work which focuses on helping the children to improve their fundamental skills which they then can implement in everyday sports including Tag Rugby, Kwik Cricket, Tri-Golf and Hockey. The skills of the Paralympic Activities of New Age Curling, Sitting Volleyball, Boccia and Goalball will also be taught and played throughout the year. There will also be a chance to work in the outdoors on some Forest School activities.
